The lawn has just been mowed, the edges are neatly trimmed \u2013 for many people, this is simply part of what makes a perfect garden. Yet it is precisely this image that is deliberately challenged in May. Because during \u2018Mow-Free May\u2019, the motto is: switch off the lawnmower, switch on nature. <\/p>

We at Ursa-Chemie are also making it very clear: we\u2019re on board!<\/p>

What is behind \u201cMowing-Free May\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>

The initiative was launched by the German Horticultural Society (Deutsche Gartenbau-Gesellschaft 1822 e.V.) in collaboration with the Rhineland-Palatinate Horticultural Academy and the Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg Horticultural Academy \u2013 and this marks the sixth time it has been held.<\/p>

The aim:
To transform millions of square metres of lawn into flowering habitats \u2013 simply by not mowing in May.<\/p>

What may at first sound like a matter of convenience is, in fact, an effective contribution to nature conservation.<\/p>

Why May, of all months?<\/strong><\/p>

May is a crucial month for many insects:<\/p>

\u2022 Wild bees tend to their brood
\u2022 Bumblebee queens establish new colonies
\u2022 Butterflies lay their eggs<\/p>

All these animals depend on flowers \u2013 and that is precisely what is missing from closely mown lawns.<\/p>

If you let the grass grow, something amazing happens:
Within a few weeks, natural flower beds spring up, filled with dandelions, daisies, clover and more.<\/p>

\ud83d\udc49 Studies even show that:
Unmown areas are home to up to five times as many insect species.<\/p>

More than just insect protection<\/strong><\/p>

A longer lawn has other benefits too:<\/p>

\u2022 Improved microclimate: the soil stays moister and cooler
\u2022 Stronger roots: the lawn becomes more resilient to drought
\u2022 Greater biodiversity: herbs and wildflowers return<\/p>

Or to put it another way:
A \u201cgreen space\u201d becomes a thriving ecosystem.<\/p>

\u201cMessy\u201d? Or simply thinking sustainably? <\/strong><\/p>

In many neighbourhoods, there is still pressure to have a perfectly manicured lawn. But this is precisely where \u2018Mowing-Free May\u2019 is sparking a change in mindset: <\/p>

\ud83d\udc49 Mowing less often isn\u2019t a sign of laziness \u2013 it\u2019s a sign of environmental awareness.<\/strong><\/p>

Instead of a \u201cmanicured lawn\u201d, the motto is: dare to be a bit wilder.<\/p>

Does that really work?<\/strong><\/p>

A look at the UK shows that the answer is yes!<\/p>

Through its \u2018No Mow May\u2019 campaign, the organisation Plantlife was able to demonstrate that: \ud83d\udc49 nectar production on lawns increases tenfold<\/p>

This means significantly more food for:
\u2022 bees
\u2022 bumblebees
\u2022 hoverflies
\u2022 butterflies <\/p>

And best of all: no need to sow new seeds.<\/p>

It\u2019s that easy to get involved<\/strong><\/p>

It\u2019s really easy to get started:
1. Leave the lawnmower in the shed
2. Observe nature
3. Count flowers and insects
4. Share your results (optionally using #M\u00e4hfreierMai)<\/p>

There is also a hands-on activity:<\/p>

\u201cEvery flower counts!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

Here, participants can:
\u2022 count flowers and insects within a one-square-metre area
\u2022 submit a photo
\u2022 take part in a nationwide competition<\/p>

Prizes include seeds, gardening books and vouchers.<\/p>

In doing so, we are making a conscious effort to promote greater sustainability and biodiversity \u2013 right on our doorstep.
