What began as an innovative nature project has established itself as a valuable initiative to support our native insect population. In the following, we would like to give you an insight into the history, progress and significance of our insect hotel.
A project with vision
Our insect hotel was created in 2020 to mark the 125th anniversary of the Zschimmer and Schwarz company. Under the motto ‘Chemistry and nature conservation not a contradiction?’, we successfully applied for and received funding.
The foundations were poured and the insect hotel erected with their own labour. Since then, it has offered numerous insect species a welcome alternative to the increasingly scarce natural habitats.
A home for many species
Our insect hotel is home to a variety of insect species, all of which play important roles in our ecosystem. The inhabitants include various bee species such as the red mason bee, the silk bee, masked bees and fur bees. Peaceful wasp species such as the earth wasp as well as golden wasps and digger wasps also utilise the cavities and reeds.
In addition, numerous species of beetle, including the beneficial ground beetle, feel at home in our insect hotel. Ground beetles are important pest controllers and contribute to the natural regulation of pests. Ladybirds, which exterminate spider mites and aphids, are also welcome guests. Even butterflies such as lemon butterflies and peacock butterflies use the insect hotel as a refuge in bad weather or in winter.
Commitment and further development
Our insect hotel is not only an important contribution to nature conservation, but also a living educational tool. It allows us and our visitors to observe the fascinating activities of insects at close quarters. The project has inspired our staff from the very beginning and is continuously maintained and developed.
Wild vines were also planted to make the insect hotel even more attractive for our younger guests. This extension will certainly help to attract even more insects and provide them with a safe habitat.
A contribution to biodiversity
After four years, we can proudly say that our insect hotel is a complete success. It has become a well-known and well-received part of our company premises. The humming and buzzing activity around the hotel shows that our commitment to nature is paying off.
Installing an insect hotel is a simple but effective way to strengthen biodiversity. It is fascinating to see how many different insect species have taken up residence in our hotel and the positive impact this has on the environment. You can see living proof of this in our video.
Conclusion
Our insect hotel is a great example of how companies can actively contribute to nature conservation. We at Ursa-Chemie are proud of what we have achieved and would like to thank everyone who has supported this project. Let’s continue to work together to protect our environment and preserve the diversity of nature.
